Extended Label Info: John Noestheden describes his work as “visual experiences that focus on aspects of the universe and our collective destiny.” This drawing is part of series inspired by an art performance Noestheden organized in the 1980s, in which he commissioned a skywriter to draw a 4-mile diameter ‘smoke ring’ over downtown Toronto at sunset. Noestheden’s work is contemplative and inspired by science and philosophy. The egg, which holds the promise of new life, often symbolizes the cycle of life and the earth. John Noestheden (1945 - ) was born in Amsterdam, and moved to Canada in 1952. He received a BFA in 1973 from the University of Windsor and a MFA in 1975 from Tulane University, New Orleans. In 1990 he accepted a position at the University of Regina teaching sculpture and drawing. In 2010, John moved to Hamilton, Ontario where he maintains a rigorous art practice. His work is exhibited internationally and is represented in Canadian and American art museums as well as public and private collections.
