Extended Label Info: In this painting, “Stories Give Us Roots,” Leah Dorion shows the importance in Indigenous culture of the role that Elders play in passing stories forward to younger generations. Pictured here are two Elders, a grandmother and grandfather. They are telling stories to the children, who are wrapped in a blanket and listening intently. Storytelling is a highly respected tradition within the Indigenous community. Here, the stories are represented by the symbols of butterflies and horses surrounding the people in the painting. The roots below the people are symbolic of how oral history connects the people to the land and to each other. Leah Marie Dorion (1970 - ) Leah Dorion is of Métis heritage, born in Nipawin, and currently living in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, part of Treaty Six Territory. Dorion is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and storyteller. Her publications include: “The Giving Tree: A Métis Story about Giving and Receiving” (2009). Her artwork combines contemporary materials and art styles with traditional Métis symbols, and her paintings often include beadwork motifs. The themes in Dorion’s work include Métis culture and history, spirituality, and the history and roles of women in Métis and Indigenous culture. Dorion’s artwork has been exhibited regionally and is held in private and public collections.
