Extended Label Info: In this painting, “Stories Give Us Roots,” Leah Dorion shows the importance in Indigenous culture of the role that Elders play in passing stories forward to younger generations. Pictured here are two Elders, a grandmother and grandfather. They are telling stories to the children, who are wrapped in a blanket and listening intently. Storytelling is a highly respected tradition within the Indigenous community. Here, the stories are represented by the symbols of butterflies and horses surrounding the people in the painting. The roots below the people are symbolic of how oral history connects the people to the land and to each other.
