Extended Label Info: This large-scale painting by Laureen Marchand is part of series of representational, narrative paintings of people she made in the 1980s. Based on a snapshot from her family photo album, this large group portrait depicts several generations of her mother’s family in front of their house. The size of this painting is on the scale of a formal portrait or history painting, which is extremely large in comparison to the original photo. By referencing the conventions and history of Western European group portraiture, Marchand asks us to consider a working-class family of settlers with the same respect as historically given to images of politicians or aristocrats. This painting was donated to Regina Public Library by Paula Scott and it hung for many years at the RPL Connaught branch library where she had worked.
