Extended Label Info: The dots of paint and symmetrical, floral patterns in Christi Belcourt’s artworks are based on her knowledge of traditional Métis beadwork, and her understanding of Indigenous botanical, medical, and spiritual healing knowledge. In discussing her artwork, Belcourt describes that traditional knowledge is often encoded into Métis beadwork patterns. Belcourt also speaks of her work as honouring the artistic practice of Indigenous women who are the keepers and teachers of knowledge and crafting. Christi Belcourt (1966 - ) Growing up in Edmonton, in Treaty Six territory, Christi Belcourt traces her family roots to the nearby historic Métis community of Lac Ste. Anne. Her ancestry includes Métis, Cree, Mohawk, English, French and Acadian. Belcourt is a painter, community-based artist and advocate for the lands, waters and Indigenous peoples. She is a lead organizer for the Onaman Collective, dedicated to language and land-based practices; and for Walking With Our Sisters a community-driven project honouring murdered or missing Indigenous women. Her work Giniigaaniimenaaning (Looking Ahead) was installed at Centre Block on Parliament Hill in 2008 to mark the Prime Minister’s historic apology to residential school survivors, their families and communities. Belcourt earned the title of Aboriginal Arts Laureate from the Ontario Arts Council (2015), and the Governor General’s Innovation Award (2016). Her work is held in numerous public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, and Canadian Museum of Civilization, First People’s Hall. She is the author of Medicines To Help Us (Gabriel Dumont Institute, 2007) and Beadwork (Ningwakwe Learning Press, 2010).
