Extended Label Info: Marie Lannoo has developed a reputation as an outstanding abstract painter whose work explores ideas of colour, surface, reflection, as well as the perceptual and optical experience of looking at a painting, using multiple illusory devices. This work is one in a series of six in the RPL Permanent Collection. It incorporates light that reflects and bounces off its highly shiny surface to reveal a grid of folded lines. The intensely coloured acrylic paint is applied onto calcium carbonate coated “mineral powder” paper which is stronger than regular paper, and can stand up to the process of being folded multiple times. Similar work was exhibited in Who’s Afraid of Purple, Orange, and Green, a Dunlop Art Gallery exhibition that explored contemporary approaches to formalism and properties of the twentieth century modern art movement that was focused on pure visual form such as line, shape, texture and colour. Marie Lannoo (1954 - ) was born in Delhi, Ontario. She earned her BFA (1980) at the University of Saskatchewan, studying painting with noted abstract artist Otto Rogers, and participating in the Emma Lake workshops, the Banff School of Arts, and in Virton, Belgium. Currently based in Saskatoon, Lannoo is known for her rigorous experiments with the materials, creating abstract artworks that play with the physical properties of surface and light, including prismatic foil, interference paint, and mineral powder paper. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally, and is held in private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank.
