Extended Label Info: Although Janet Werner is known for her fictional portraits that challenge ideals of youth and beauty, early work such as Untitled is an example of her investigation into abstraction, an artform that focuses on form, colour, shape or visual qualities. This work, Untitled, for example, is a simple image of an oval form but reminds us of many things – outer space, a moving object, a portal, or maybe a flying disk. Abstract works, such as these, could also inspire feelings or emotions unique to each individual viewer. Janet Werner (1959- ) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She received her BFA from the Maryland Institute in Baltimore in 1985 and her MFA from Yale University in New Haven, Conneticut in 1987. Werner taught at the University of Saskatchewan for twelve years before going on to teach drawing and painting at Concordia University in Montreal. Werner’s work has been shown widely in Canada at public and private galleries as well as artist-run centers and she has received numerous awards.
