Extended Label Info: Primarily known for his still life paintings, George Glenn uses this genre to explore colour and texture, working in a variety of media including acrylics, oils, gouache, and pastel. Stylistically, his work sits between abstraction and representation. Although he sets up a still life display to work from, and observes it closely, Glenn’s subject matter is a starting point, a visual anchor in his creative process. As he paints, he welcomes spontaneity. “Table and Flower” exemplifies this approach. Although the title states clearly the subject Glenn chose to depict, the way he paints these objects demonstrate his interest in experimenting with texture and colour. He sacrifices an accuracy of form to focus on textural brush strokes and expressive colour. The result conveys a sense of energy and emotion. George Glenn (1948- ) was born in Regina, and grew up in the prairie cities of Regina, Winnipeg, and Calgary. He began studying painting at a young age, earning his BFA with honours from the University of Manitoba (1970), and MFA from the University of Cincinnati (1974). In 1975, after spending a year in France, Glenn moved to Prince Albert as artist-in-residence with the Prince Albert Arts Council. Glenn taught at the Prince Albert Regional Community College until 1987, and at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon from 1981 to 1986. Widely respected as a teacher, Glenn continues to paint and lead art workshops in Prince Albert. Glenn’s portraits and work in still-life have been exhibited widely in Western Canada, and are collected in numerous private, public and corporate collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa), MacKenzie Art Gallery, and Royal Bank of Canada.
