Stylistic elements like lighting and symmetry are strong visual qualities in Hall’s work, which allow greater focus to the nature of his subjects. This photograph, taken in the town of Humbolt, Saskatchewan depicts a couple within their domestic space. Other elements such as décor and the uncomplicated posing of the couple also contribute to revealing a distinct sense of time, place, and culture. Like in many of Hall’s photographs, he captures the relatable universality of his subject matter, while also exposing its unique and distinct qualities. Don Hall (1951- ) is a Regina-based photographer and dark-room printer. Born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Hall began his studies at University of Regina (1968-1970) at a time when photography was a film and chemical based medium. He earned a Diploma of Photographic Technology at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, Alberta (1972). In addition to his studio practice, Hall worked at University of Regina as Manager of the Photography Department until 2014. A member of Saskatoon’s Photographers Gallery (now PAVED Arts), Hall co-edited a book with Randy Burton on Saskatchewan photography entitled, “Between Time and Place: Contemporary Saskatchewan Photography” (1989, Fifth House Publishers). His work has been exhibited nationally, and is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).
