Extended Label Info: Anne Kahane’s print, “Two Figures” was created with the oldest form of printmaking: the woodcut. In this method, the artist uses knives or other carving tools to engrave a design or image into a wooden block. After inking the surface, the artist places the block on the base of a printing press and sets a dampened piece of paper on top, rolling it through the press to create a print. This can also be done by hand. This technique creates a strong contrast between the black ink and the white of the paper. In this image, the natural wood grain of the block can be seen. The texture echoes Kahane’s incisions into the wood and adds to the illusion of light and shadow illuminating her figures against the stark, black background. Anne Kahane, R.C.A. (1924- ) Born in Vienna, Austria, Anne Kahane's family immigrated to Canada in 1926, eventually settling in Montreal in 1931. Kahane is primarily known for her work in sculpture, using wood, brass and aluminum, but her artistic range also includes drawing and printmaking. As a young woman Kahane took night classes in traditional sculpture at L'École des Beaux-arts in Montréal (1940). Attending Cooper Union School in New York City (1945-47) Kahane studied architecture, industrial design, commercial art, and wood carving. Early in her career, Kahane was the only Canadian to earn a prize in the first International Sculpture Competition sponsored by the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (1953). Settling in Montréal, Kahane taught fine arts at Concordia University (1965-1980). After a term as artist in residence at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario (1980-82), she returned to Montréal. An associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy, Kahane exhibited with the RCA between 1964 and 1976, and her artwork has been shown internationally, representing Canada at the Venice Biennale (1958), the Worlds Fair, Brussels (1958), Expo 67 in Montréal, and the Canadian Embassy in Pakistan (1974). Her works are held in numerous public and private collections throughout Canada, and internationally.
