Extended Label Info: Known for his use of rich colour and precise realism, Don McVeigh works almost exclusively in watercolour and printmaking. His compositions explore visual problems using arrangements of flowers and vessels, cloth, string, dried fish, bamboo and other natural materials. Entitled “Blue Vase”, this still-life featuring a peony in a ceramic vase is part of a series of floral studies that McVeigh created in the early 1980s in homage to the beauty of humble objects. The artwork is an artist-made print, an aquatint etching hand-coloured with watercolour paint. The white decoration on the blue vase echoes the grace of the flower it holds. The composition is dramatic: strong shadows suggest an artificial spotlight highlighting the arrangement against the featureless, theatrical backdrop. Don McVeigh (1951- ) was born in Edmonton, Alberta. McVeigh studied printmaking at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, earning his BFA with Distinction in 1973. After travelling in Holland during 1975, McVeigh moved to Saskatchewan. He earned his MFA at the University of Regina in 1978, and then moved to Saskatoon. In 1985, McVeigh moved to Ottawa, where he taught drawing at the Ottawa School of Art for many years. McVeigh's artworks have been exhibited across Canada since the early 1970s and are held in numerous private and public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank and JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture (formerly Glenbow Museum).
