Extended Label Info: Joe Fafard in well-known for his portrayal of farm animals, typically cows and horses. This work “Bird” is a lithographic print showing a bird’s-eye view of a cattle pen. Lithography is a printing process that uses a flat stone or metal plate on which the image areas are worked using a greasy medium so that the printing ink will adhere to them, while the non-image areas are made ink-repellent. To create this image, Fafard would have created a different plate for each colour in his drawing, and then used a printing press to apply individual colours to each print, gradually building the full image. Using this arial perspective, Fafard allows us to see the world as a bird might, bringing us closer to nature while depicting it in a different way. Joseph Hector Yvon Fafard (1942 – 2019) was born in the French-Canadian community of Ste. Marthe, SK. He earned his BFA from the University of Manitoba (1966), MFA at Pennsylvania State University (1968), and taught sculpture at the University of Regina until 1974. In 1985, Fafard opened Julienne Atelier Inc., a bronze foundry in Pense, SK. Joe Fafard has exhibited his work internationally, and received many honours: Officer of the Order of Canada (1981); Architectural Institute of Canada Allied Arts Award (1987); honorary degrees from the University of Regina (1989), University of Manitoba (2007) and University of Saskatchewan (2012); Saskatchewan Order of Merit (2002); National Prix Montfort (2003); Lieutenant Governor’s Saskatchewan Centennial Medal for the Arts (2005); CTV Citizen of the Year (2006); and the Saskatchewan Arts Board Lifetime Achievement Award (2007). His work is held in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Canada.
