Extended Label Info: Kenneth Webb uses both traditional methods to make art such as etching, aquatint, drawing, and painting, as well as experimental methods that incorporate photographic images and handmade objects into mixed media works. In this artwork entitled “Flight Path” the background of rich, dark brown shadows and plant leaves provides a deep contrast to the foreground subject, a series of geometric shapes. These crisp, white, overlapping shapes represent the trajectory of a paper airplane as if this image were a time-lapse motion study. A line of colour zips through the composition with alternating bands of primary yellow, blue, and red, adding to the sense of action. In the book, Printmaking in Alberta, 1945-1985 (by Bente Roed Cochran), Webb describes the elements that interest him in making artwork as “…contrasts and contradictions: deep versus shallow space, light versus dark areas, balance versus instability, natural versus mechanistic.” (p.145) Though undated, this print is similar to works that Webb produced in 1981, such as “Coming to Rest II” (Ibid). Kenneth A. Webb (1950 - ) was born in the small town of Swalwell, close to Calgary, Alberta. After graduating with Honours from the Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts) in Calgary (1976), Webb attended the Royal College of Art in London, England (1977-78). Returning to Canada, Webb began his career in printmaking with Trojan Press Etching Studio (1978-81) before opening his own press in Calgary, K. Webb Fine Art Printing. In addition to his studio work, Webb taught printmaking at the University of Calgary, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, University of Lethbridge, Red Deer College, and ACAD, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Webb’s awards include the Queen Elizabeth Prize (1974, 1975, 1976), and the Award of Excellence from ACAD (2002). His work is collected in corporate and public collections including Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa), Art Gallery of Victoria (BC), Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Edmonton), Glenbow Museum (Calgary), Winnipeg Art Gallery, (MB), and Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina).
