Extended Label Info: Gilbert Marion uses bold colours and shapes in his abstract composition, Au Printemps (In Spring). The title invites us to think about the time of year when the snow melts and plants begin to grow again. This is a linocut, a type of artist-created print. The artist uses shapes cut into lino-blocks to apply layers of colour onto the paper using a printing press. Here, Marion uses transparent inks in layers, stacking abstract shapes to create a sense of visual depth. The organic forms mix bright colour with earthy tones, suggesting the muddy walks and new flowers of the Spring season. Gilbert Marion (1933- ) is a Canadian printmaker and painter, part of a dynamic group of artists in Montréal who developed print-making as an innovative art-form in Canada. He was born in Montréal, and studied at the Institute of Graphic Arts (1953) with the master engraver and abstract artist, Albert Dumouchel. Marion continued his studies in printmaking at L'École des Beaux-arts in Montréal, graduating in 1961. As a young artist, Marion worked in paint, printmaking and photography. His first two exhibitions (a solo, and a group exhibition) presented photographic work, and he received early recognition, winning awards at Typography in Toronto (1959) and at the Salon de Jeune Peinture in Montreal (1960), and participating in the Fourth International Exhibition of Printmakers in Ljubljana, Slovenia (formerly part of Yugoslavia) in 1960. Marion and his colleagues in Montréal are remembered in Canadian art-history as influential for their experiments with new approaches, materials, printing procedures and uses of paper.
