Extended Label Info: There is a surreal quality in this engraved drawing by Alan Weinstein, a hauntingly dream-like image that seems to resolve into a face. The strong contrast between the dark lines and negative space give the form depth without the use of highlights. This is an early work by Weinstein, and quite graphic in comparison to his later work in painting. Over the five decades of his career, Weinstein explored dramatically different styles, media, and techniques in painting and printmaking. In his early works, Weinstein used a fairly monochromatic palette of colours, building lights and darks with fine lines. In his mid-career Weinstein began to explore bold, bright colours, and thick, expressive brushstrokes in an Abstract Expressionist style. His most recent works continue to use bright colour, depicting almost geometric, abstracted landscapes. Alan Weinstein (1939-) Born in Toronto, Ontario, Weinstein studied at the École du Louvre in Paris (1959), and at Princeton University, New Jersey, USA, earning his BA in 1961. In the same year, Weinstein had his first solo show in Pollock Gallery, Toronto. He earned his MFA at the University of Iowa (1963), and travelled Europe and Greece. Returning to Canada, Weinstein taught for a short time at the University of Saskatchewan (1967-70). During this time, Weinstein and his wife, the American writer known as Nina Barragan (Rocío Lasansky Weinstein) purchased a farm in Teeswater, Ontario. They converted the barn into a studio where Weinstein still works during the summer and fall months. They also purchased a large 90-year-old barn in Iowa City, and renovated the space into an extensive home-studio and gallery. In 2016, Weinstein sold this complex, and downsized into an industrial facility in Iowa City. His artwork has been exhibited internationally, most notably receiving a retrospective at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in 2018.
