Extended Label Info: These images were created with a computer scanner, which although has a shallow depth of focus creates an illusion of depth. The images are part of “Baba’s House”, a series by the artists Lucien Durey and Katie Kozak created with materials from the home of Kozak’s Ukrainian-Canadian grandmother, or “Baba” in Ukrainian, and exhibited at Dunlop Art Gallery in 2014. The series reveals a loving portrait of Kozak’s grandmother, Sophie Ostrowski, through the hundreds of everyday objects she had in her home; a miscellany of school portraits, doilies, family photos, pencils, salt and pepper collections, canning supplies and more, evokes the experience of rural Prairie life and homesteading in the mid-twentieth century. The project also documents the hybridization of first and second-generation ethnic identities, intergenerational friendship, and exchange. Lucien Durey was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan and now lives and works in Vancouver. A visual artist and singer, Durey has exhibited and performed across Canada and the United States. He holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and an MFA from Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts. Katie Kozak is a Creighton, Saskatchewan based artist of Métis and Ukrainian heritage. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Victoria and studied at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Prairies and Western Canada.
