Extended Label Info: Working at the height of Mid-Century Modernism, Stan Day experimented with the visual effects of colour. He often used several types of art mediums in his work, layering colours for maximum effect. As Day explained, his interest was to explore the relations between colours, “In the back of my mind I am always seeking simplicity, but I seek it in a complicated way…I like rich colours. I like lots of colour, but each colour has to relate to another in a particular situation.” In this artwork, the composition appears to be an excerpt of a larger image: the upper portion of the painting is a close-up of an arm in a striped sleeve, while the bottom half appears to be a reflective surface, such as a frame or railing. Stanley Ellis Day (1933-2020) was born in the town of Yakima, Washington State, USA. He began his studies at the University of Washington (1953-1954) and earned his Bachelor of Education at the Central Washington State University (1956). In 1957, he moved to Mexico to study art at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende. Moving to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1960, he worked as a lecturer while studying for his Master’s degree in Education. He received his M.Ed. degree (1962) from Central Washington State University. Hired as an Associate Professor by the University of Saskatchewan, Day became the Department Head in Art and Art History in 1966. From 1968-70, Day also served at the Saskatchewan Arts Board. During his long career, Day was an active member of the Saskatoon Arts Community. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada and in the United States, and is represented in public and private collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, Saskatchewan Arts Board, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Remai Modern (formerly Mendel Art Gallery), Allied Arts Council of Yakima County, and Gulf Canada Resources Ltd. (Calgary).
