Extended Label Info: In this image of an abstracted figure reclining on a bed, Warren Peterson’s expertise in printmaking is evident from the gradient of tones from deep inky black to the white of the paper. To create the image, Peterson used several intaglio techniques such as etched lines and aquatint textures. The process takes several steps. First a copper plate is etched in acid baths, creating the grooves and textures to hold printer’s ink. Next, ink is rolled onto the plate with a brayer, and the plate is wiped carefully to remove excess ink. Then a thick sheet of paper is placed over the inked image and they are rolled together through the printing press. Warren Henry Peterson (1935-) was born in Salina, Kansas. He earned his BA (1960) at the University of Kansas City, Missouri. Peterson then studied with master printmaker Mauricio Lasansky at the University of Iowa, earning his MA (1964). Peterson moved to Saskatoon to teach at the University of Saskatchewan. He studied with abstract expressionist Robert Knipschild at the University of Cincinnati, earning his MFA (1969). At this time, Peterson began focusing on drawing in his personal work, and working with dream imagery. In 1972, he travelled to Baker Lake, NWT to teach printmaking. He studied at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and earned a Diploma in Gestalt Theory and Practice (1979). Retiring as an Associate Professor in 1993, he continued to work with the U of S, serving as artist-in-residence (1994). Peterson’s artwork has exhibited internationally, and is held in private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, University of Saskatchewan, MacKenzie Art Gallery, and Saskatchewan Arts Board.
