Extended Label Info: Throughout her extensive career as a printmaker, Ann McCall has explored themes of landscape, researching new ways to visually represent the land and our relationship with nature. In this lithographic print, Fields VI, McCall depicts the view from a window, a dynamic composition of grain fields in a forced perspective from extreme closeup to distant horizon. The image is “framed” by a window casing and woven bamboo blinds, which situate us as viewers inside a room looking out over the field. Although this dynamic suggests a contrast between the interior and the outdoors, and the viewer and the land, the colours McCall has chosen are harmonious and unite the scene. The grey used for the blinds is a pastel tone, as are the calming green and harvest yellow in the landscape. Ann McCall RCA (1941 - ) was born in Toronto, Ontario. McCall earned her BA in Art History at McGill University in Montreal (1964). Moving to Pennsylvania in the USA, McCall studied art production at the University of Pittsburgh (1971-74). She returned to Montreal in the mid-1970s and studied at the Université Concordia, earning her BFA in printmaking (1978). After graduation, McCall established her studio in Montreal, Quebec where she has worked as a printmaker, calligrapher, and mixed media artist. McCall was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1982, serving as president from 2010-2012. McCall is also a member of Atelier Circulaire, an artist-run centre in Montreal dedicated to printmaking which offers training, access to equipment, and exhibition space. Since 1977, McCall has exhibited her work in over 65 solo exhibitions in Canada, the US and Australia, and has participated in over 250 international group print exhibitions. Her artwork is held in numerous public, corporate, and private collections.
