Extended Label Info: David P. Hunsberger creates artist-made prints using a unique approach to silk-screen printing. Most silk-screens are created with a photographic process, but Hunsberger hand-paints his stencil screens using a liquid “stencil filler”. He usually creates 10 to 15 colour separations or screens to build his images up, printing one colour layer at a time. As he overlaps inks on the image, he creates new tones, adding complexity and texture to his image. Hunsberger is best known for his work in landscape and has created images that range from individual wildflowers to forest scenes, rivers, and panoramic fields. In this image, “First Snow” he depicts the geometry of a farmer’s field in early winter, portraying the almost black and white contrast of snow and land with a range of warm yellows and bluish greys. David Peter Hunsberger was born and grew up in Waterloo, Ontario. He attended Waterloo Collegiate Institute, graduating in 1968, before studying printmaking at the University of Waterloo, and earning his BFA Honours in Fine Arts (1976). Establishing his studio in Waterloo, Hunsberger is well-known for his innovative work in silk-screen or “serigraph” printing. His art has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous international public and corporate collections.
