Extended Label Info: In this study of apples, the artist Loren Teed uses a simplified colour palette to focus on creating interest through composition. The navy-blue background recedes, and the warm yellows push forward. The random scattering of the apples on the tablecloth is a similar composition to the still-life studies by the Post-Impressionist, Cezanne. In Teed’s work, detail is further stripped to a minimum. The contours of each apple are deftly captured with only a simple line in oil pastel. The title of this work, “Green Apples #2”, refers simply to its subject matter. Cezanne also titled his still-life studies with short, descriptive names. This practice emphasizes the painting’s exploration of simplified form and compositional purity. Loren Murry Teed (1928 – 2004) Born in Saskatchewan, Loren Teed lived and worked in Saskatoon and Prince Albert. He attended the University of Saskatchewan where he received his Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and a Diploma in Native Studies. Teed taught fine arts at Walter Murray Collegiate in Saskatoon, and in Northern Saskatchewan. In his visual art career, Teed worked in a variety of media, including sculpture, and painting in watercolour and acrylic. Teed’s brother was also an artist and worked as a photographer. Teed’s artwork has been exhibited regionally, including with Dunlop Art Gallery in, “Four from Prince Albert: Connie Freedy, George Glenn, Myles MacDonald, Loren Teed” and is held public and private collections.
