Extended Label Info: Jahan Maka's early oil paintings are marble-layered, anecdotal and colourful vignettes of his observations of life in Flin Flon and his recollections of his early life in Lithuania. His later paintings reflect a wide spectrum of sources ranging from his Lithuanian heritage to portraits and reinterpretations of current news stories. Maka’s child-like and ingenuous treatment of these themes, the ethnic flavor of his work, and his preoccupation with documentation of his life experience all situated him easily within the conceptual framework of folk art. His work is also characterized by a combination of spatial perspectives, combining frontal, side and aerial views, resulting in a representation of a unique world view that is eclectic, multifaceted and layered. The work, Legend! Leonginus Returns To His Village In Lithuania From The Wars Roman Wars In Escariotia, was exhibited in a retrospective of Maka’s work at Dunlop Art Gallery in 1988. Johan Maka (1900-1987) was born in Lithuania and immigrated to Canada in 1927 and changed his name to John Thomason. He first worked as a miner in Manitoba, and in 1942 moved to Flin Flon, Saskatchewan. In 1968, he began to paint and continued until his death in 1987. His work is in numerous collections throughout Canada.
