Extended Label Info: This textile work by Patrick Traer comes from a body of work created in the 1990’s. The delicately embroidered central image bears likeness to roots, branches, arteries, vascular tissues, or other structures in nature or science. The translucent, delicate quality of the sheer fabric also alludes to living tissues such cell membranes, skin, and fascia. Hung to create a languid, space-filled form echoes a contemplation of the living body that is vulnerable but resilient. Created during the AIDS epidemic, Traer gestures towards a compassionate approach in the care of one another and our environment. Patrick Traer studied at the University of British Columbia, the University of Saskatchewan, and received an MFA from York University. He is best known for his large format drawings, embroidered textile work and upholstered sculptures which often extend into mixed media installations using video, photography, light-boxes, and blown glass. Traer’s work has been exhibited widely across Canada and internationally.
