Extended Label Info: The title of this photograph refers to the site where it was created, the Forward Operating Base Ma’sum Ghar in Southern Afghanistan, Panjwai/Zahri District. It is one of a series of three photographs featuring Engineers, Negotiators, and Medics respectively. The series was created in 2009 by Althea Thauberger, in collaboration with female soldiers stationed in Kandahar, while she was stationed as a Canadian War Artist. Thauberger often works through collaboration with groups of people who are not typically performers. Using a variety of media, including film, video, audio, and performance she explores social identities and communities. In her artwork, Thauberger is interested in how a diverse group of people can bond through teamwork, as she describes, “the ways that cultures develop over the course of a short period of time when you are living and working together in extreme conditions.” As Thauberger explains, “It never appealed to me to be an artist who was separated from the world. I think the most exciting work I do is when I’m working in the world, socially-orientated photography is very much about that.” Althea Thauberger (1970 - ) Born in Saskatoon, Thauberger studied photography at Concordia University in Montreal, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000, and her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria in 2002. Currently based in Vancouver, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory at the University of British Columbia. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections.
