Extended Label Info: This landscape is an emotive painting of a summer day at Crescent Lake, a location just south of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. There are canoes in the lake and several teepees on the shore. This painting was made when a neighbor of Highfield wanted to learn how to paint. Highfield set up two easels and painted along with his neighbor. The neighbor followed Highfield’s lead on his own canvas, copying Highfield and learning painting techniques as he watched. This work was donated to the Regina Public Library’s Permanent Collection by Highfield’s daughters after his passing. Charles Fredrick Highfield (1877 -1946), was a Canadian artist in the 1900s, whose daughters donated many of his paintings to the Regina Public Library. It is not known if he had any formal training, but he was a talented photographer and an oil painter who enjoyed painting locations near where he lived in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. He captured the simple prairie life with his landscape paintings in the 1930s and 40s.
