Hogg is known for his work in landscape and portraiture, drawing his subject matter from the mountains of his hometown in Kimberley, BC and from images collected during his travels. Some of his noted portraits are based on Indigenous and cowboy performers at the Calgary Stampede and local powwow events. This scene of cows in a prairie pasture is an early oil painting by Hogg. Although it is not known precisely which area it depicts, the view is a familiar sight to the ranchers of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. George C. Hogg (1929 - ) was born in Chapman Camp, British Columbia and attended school in the mining town of Kimberley, BC. After high school, Hogg attended the Vancouver School of the Arts (now Emily Carr University of Art & Design). At that time in Vancouver, while abstract art was developing, Hogg found himself inspired by realism, and the land and history of the northwest. He returned to Kimberley and his beloved Kootenay mountains, married and started a family. Throughout his life, Hogg maintained painting, though he also had a career as VP of Personnel at Cominco, a mining and smelting company. His paintings have been exhibited internationally in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, notably including the C.M. Russell Art Show, the Ellensburg National Art Show, and the Calgary Stampede Art Show. In 2000, George Hogg received the John Clymen Award recognizing him as a top Western American Cowboy artist.
