Extended Label Info: Ron Hamilton was born on the Ahaswinis reserve near Port Alberni in 1948. Hamilton apprenticed under the carver Henry Hunt and participated in a 4-year collaboration with Haida artist Francis Williams in Victoria when he was an emerging artist. During his early adulthood, he worked at the Provincial Museum of BC making carvings in many different mediums. He started creating silkscreen designs while working for the museum. In 1974 he returned to Ahaswinis to work with his people. He participated in the cultural art of his people extending his experience from printwork and carving to traditional singing and dancing. While there, he acted as a cultural advisor and teacher for the West Coast people. Hamilton has made great contributions to the Nuu-chah-nulth style of art and design through his carving and prints and encourages younger generations in Ahswinis to become involved with their artistic traditions to support the vitality of their culture.
