Extended Label Info: Well known for her abstract paintings, Alicia Popoff described her work as a personal map and an exploration of the world around her. Inspired by gardens, poetry, and nature, Popoff’s work is constructed from sounds such as the birds and the wind, and tastes and smells, like the crisp winter air. Popoff’s work on paper has a childlike energy and life that comes from her spontaneous response to the materials themselves. This is seen in Traveling Bird House with Bird as the bird house and bird appear to be individual creatures interacting and responding to one another. Popoff’s abstract style takes what is often seen as simple subject matter and creates a piece with a unique narrative. It is imagination like Popoff’s that allow the viewer to experience the interconnectedness of the natural world in a different light. Alicia Popoff (1950-2015) was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Popoff received her BFA in 1979 and MFA in 1984, both from the University of Saskatchewan. After obtaining her MFA, Popoff became a prominent member of the Sasktachewan’s art community, mounting numerous exhibitions of her paintings, imparting her talents to her students and designing with her sculptor husband Leslie Potter installations familiar around Saskatoon. Popoff’s work has been exhibited across Canada in numerous exhibitions and is represented in numerous collections including Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa), Kenderdine Gallery (Saskatoon), University of Winnipeg and the Air Canada Collection.
