Extended Label Info: This artwork titled Gwen was included in a 2000 Dunlop Art Gallery exhibition called Beautiful Losers. Known for her portrait work, Janet Werner’s paintings often focus on the emotional and psychological pathos of her subjects. Relying on our human capacity to read an emotional state on the slightest facial gesture combined with an expressive use of colour, Werner captures the interiority of her characters with subjectivity and intensity, drawing on our ability to identify with these characters. Resultingly, these works highlight our capacity for empathy and a desire for human connection. Janet Werner (1959- ) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute (1985), and MFA from Yale University, (1987). Werner taught at the University of Saskatchewan and is currently Professor of Studio Arts with Concordia University in Montreal. She has participated in numerous residencies in Banff, New York and Paris. Her work has shown widely internationally, including the Prague Biennale (2003), and is held in numerous private and public collections.
