Extended Label Info: Cyndy Chwelos' ceramic pieces are designed with a specific function however, they also serve as art objects on which to explore sculptural and painterly expressions. Her style is highly decorative using bold colours and patterns. She sometimes adds broken pieces of commercially produced ceramic to hand crafted earthenware. This piece was hand built using slabs of earthenware clay. The artist also used small strips of clay, or coils, to add textured decoration to parts of the surface as well as a decorative leaf-like motif. Cyndy Chwelos was born in North Battleford, SK and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon in 1983. She later received an M.A. in art education and curriculum studies at the University of British Columbia in 2004. Chwelos is passionate about social engagement through the arts, and works to build community by making art with diverse groups of people. She often coordinates residencies that bring professional artists together with community members who may not see themselves as artists in collaboration. She currently teaches courses that focus on social engagement in the arts at Langara College in Vancouver, BC.
