Extended Label Info: In this painting, quiet and light coloured lines seemingly represent ethereal light that darts off the page and spreads outward over the paper. Cool blues and mellow yellows imply the sense of a calm summer morning, yet the harsh and direct lines give rise to questions of how calm it can truly be. Jonathan Forrest sees his work in this time as a development or premutation of modernism, and he has taken to the non-objective painting that has resonated in Saskatchewan since the 1950’s. Jonathan Forrest (1962-) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Canada with his family in 1977. He received both his BFA (1983) and MFA (1991) from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Forrest has participated in numerous workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan as well as attended the Triangle Artists’ Workshop in Brooklyn, New York. Forrest’s paintings have been exhibited across Canada and in the United States and England. His work is represented in other collections such as The Mendel Art Gallery Collection at Remai Modern, MacKenzie Art Gallery, University of Saskatchewan, University of Lethbridge, and the Edmonton Art Gallery.
