Extended Label Info: Ina Maud Sheldon-Williams had a fine eye for detail and spent many years refining her practice. She, not unlike her husband Henry Inglis Sheldon-Williams, preferred to work in pencil, watercolor and oil paint, reflecting the style of realism that was popular during the turn of the twentieth century. This drawing is a study of a dog, that perhaps Ina might have painted in full. The image is simple and quick as it is a study for a larger piece. What is wonderful about this study are the notes that dot the perimeter of the image. This is a rare occasion for viewers, letting them enter the mindset of Ina as she goes through the drafting stage of her artwork. The image is simple fresh, capturing the charming character of her canine subject. Ina Maud Sheldon-Williams was active from 1900-1950. She was the wife of well-known husband Henry Inglis Sheldon-Williams, who was a prolific painter and water colour artist in the early 1900s and a Canadian war artist in WW1. It is not known if she had any formal education in the arts but what her artwork indicates a refined practice and a fine eye for detail.
