Extended Label Info: Falling from Afar is comprised of six industrially fabricated lightboxes, each depicting a stylized, abstracted face. These illuminated pieces were originally a sight specific installation, hung on the north side of the Regina Public Library’s Central Library (1997-1998) and sat within the context of Regina’s downtown corporate scene equipped with signs and logos. Each face suggests aspects of the human experience such as the rhythms of the body, the daily orbit of day and night, and the cycle of life and death. Along with questioning individual identity within a technological, digital, surveillance-reliant society, Traer also addresses the technologies that can alter our physical appearances and splice and replace our genetic material. Patrick Traer studied at the University of British Columbia, the University of Saskatchewan, and received an MFA from York University. He is best known for his large format drawings, embroidered textile work and upholstered sculptures which often extend into mixed media installations using video, photography, light-boxes, and blown glass. Traer’s work has been exhibited widely across Canada and internationally.
