Extended Label Info: One of Canada’s most respected artists, Allen Sapp was born on Red Pheasant Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory, and lived in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Known as Kiskayetum (he perceives-it), Sapp’s artwork was rooted in his identity. Known for a photographic memory, he painted daily life as he observed and remembered it growing up with his grandparents on the reserve in the 1930s and 1940s. His work often tells a personal story, with elements and people from his lived experience featured in his work. Sapp’s work stands as an important record of the Northern Plains Cree in the early part of the 20th century. Allen Fredrick Sapp (1928 – 2015) Sapp was an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, recipient of the Saskatchewan Award of Merit, Lifetime Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Saskatchewan Arts Board and National Aboriginal Achievement Award, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, and is held in numerous private, public, and corporate collections, including the Allen Sapp Gallery in North Battleford. His work is also featured in numerous books and films, most notably The Song Within My Heart, Nokum is My Teacher, and A Cree Life.
