Extended Label Info: This oil painting of a large Prairie sky with a sliver of wintery landscape below has the simplicity of a sketch painted en plein air-- out in the landscape. Though not as thickly painted as Hardy’s larger, more finished works, the bold brushstrokes and selective use of colour are characteristic of his style in the early 1980s. Hardy is inspired by the stark simplicity of the prairie landscape and the drama of the luminous sky, and uses his painting to explore his emotional reaction to the land. In his more recent works, Hardy has become known for his sumptuous use of colour and expressionistically dramatic clouds. John Gregory Hardy (1950 - ) Known today as one of Canada’s best landscape painters, Gregory Hardy was born in Saskatoon, and studied photography and media studies at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto with the goal of becoming a documentary photographer (1970-72). Meeting and working with a group of painters based in Saskatoon inspired Hardy to return to Saskatchewan and to learn painting. Otto Rogers, Dorothy Knowles and Roger Vincent were all strong influences on his development. Hardy attended the Emma Lake workshops, studied with the American Colour-field painter, Friedel Dzubas. Hardy has taught art at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts (Fort San, 1975-1980), the University of Alberta (1987), and Memorial University (Newfoundland, 1999). Currently based in Saskatoon, Hardy is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of artists. His work has been exhibited since 1974, and is held in numerous private and public collections, both locally and internationally.
