Extended Label Info: This sculpture was commissioned for the 2018 province-wide exhibition project Roadside Attractions, coordinated by Dunlop Art Gallery. The work was originally installed in Montmartre, Saskatchewan. Most of the first Montmartre settlers were French European urbanites that left the old world to start a new life as farmers. This text-based sculpture is Sabourin’s imagined response these settlers may have had to the Prairie landscape – their physical and emotional reaction to the flat land of a new continent and lifestyle. The text-based outdoor installation refers to these settlers or anybody that came from away. The ‘absent mountain’ of the sculpture, for the artist, embodies anything monumental that settlers may have left behind – the weight of friends, family members, and memories. Vicky Sabourin (lives and works in Montreal. She holds an MFA from Concordia University. Her work has been presented in art galleries, museums and artist-run centres in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In 2014 she was named emerging artist of the year by the newspaper La Presse and was a finalist for the Pierre AyotAward.
