Extended Label Info: If you are from Saskatchewan, you may know that Emma Lake is a place not a person, and that for much of the 20th Century, Emma Lake was the site for a summer workshop series that hosted a series of international artists, including post-war modernists Jack Shadbolt, John Cage, Clement Greenberg, and Barnett Newman. These workshops fostered the development of abstraction and International Modernism in the prairies. In this artwork, Kyle Herranen references this history of modernism by addressing Emma Lake in his title, while making visual reference to a modernist painting, “Voice of Fire” by Barnett Newman. In humorous contrast, Herranen’s artwork is much smaller, and instead of being painted on canvas, is made using picture-framing material. Herranen often uses humour in his work to examine the hierarchies in the art world, questioning the differences between art and craft, the real and the representational, and high and low art, which often have masculine or feminine attributes. Herranen works to eliminate these distinctions to honour all methods of production as artforms worthy of contemplation. Kyle Herranen (1977 - ) Born in Espanola, Ontario, Herranen studied classical animation at Sheridan College in Oakville, (1997) before earning his BFA at York University (2004), and his MFA in Sculpture at the University of Regina (2008). Herranen’s artwork has exhibited nationally, and in 2014 he was commissioned by the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development to represent the Province of Saskatchewan for a project at Canada House in London, UK. Herranen currently lives and works in Lively, Ontario.
