Extended Label Info: For almost 40 years Marlene Creates’ work has explored the relationship between human experience and the land, and the impact they have on each other while attempting to restore sustainable practices and attitudes towards our natural resources. Since 2002, her artistic practice is the close observation and work with the six acres of boreal forest where she lives. Her photographs often document a conscious gesture within the landscape, using natural materials as her visual tools. Marlene Creates (1952 - ) lives and works in Portugal Cove, Newfoundland & Labrador. Since the mid-1970s, her work has been presented in over 350 solo and group exhibitions and screenings across Canada and internationally. Since 2005 she has held over 40 site-specific, multidisciplinary events in the patch of boreal forest where she lives, called The Boreal Poetry Garden. As a senior Canadian female artist Creates has been an active advocate for artists and has lectured extensively in Canada and abroad. She is also an active curator and has received numerous prestigious awards, recognizing her impact to visual culture and advocacy.
