Extended Label Info: Aganetha Dyck is best known for her artistic transformation of common household items in order to highlight the traditional work of women. In “Canned Buttons”, various jars are filled are canned and “pickled.” By preserving these unorthodox items, Dyck considers the work of women as having artistic relevance with cooking, sewing, knitting work revealing personal, familial and cultural identities. Dyck is also well-known for her work with honeybees that create elaborate honeycombs on objects she places in hives. Aganetha Dyck (b. 1937) was born in Marquette, MB is a Winnipeg-based artist who is interested in interspecies communication and environmental issues, specifically the power of the small. She was the recipient of the Manitoba Arts Council Award of Distinction in 2006, and Canada Council’s Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2007. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery and the Glenbow Museum. Dyck currently lives and works in Winnipeg, MB.
