Extended Label Info: Since the late 1980s, Jonathan Forrest’s work has been part of a resurgence in Western Canadian abstract art. Influenced by Saskatoon artists such as William Perehudoff and Robert Christie, Forrest’s work invites a response to the material nature of his paintings. Forrest creates work such as these through a method that involves tilting a horizontal canvas upwards allowing the wet paint to flow down in random, yet controlled manner. In Lattice, there is a detectable structure of crisscrossing strokes of light emanating through ethereal colors, acting as delicate sun-lit beams that allow for contemplation and reflection. Jonathan Forrest (1962-) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and came to Canada with his family in 1977. He received both his BFA (1983) and MFA (1991) from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Forrest has participated in numerous workshops at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan as well as attended the Triangle Artists’ Workshop in Brooklyn, New York. Forrest’s paintings have been exhibited across Canada and in the United States and England. His work is represented in other collections such as The Mendel Art Gallery Collection at Remai Modern, MacKenzie Art Gallery, University of Saskatchewan, University of Lethbridge, and the Edmonton Art Gallery.
