Extended Label Info: “I paint for the sheer love of painting. And I love to be in the wild places.” It is with these words that Rigmor Clarke sums up her passion as a painter of landscapes. Though influenced by impressionistic Swedish landscapes from a young age, it was in northern Saskatchewan where Clarke found the landscapes that fueled her paintings. The visual and emotional impact of untouched nature was what she has found to be the most compelling aspect. Clarke’s fervor for the northern Saskatchewan landscape can be seen in Omy where, although this scene was likely rather quiet and untouched by industrial culture, she portrayed it with a dramatic energy using bold, active brush strokes and thick visceral paint. As Clarke often paints while camping alone for days, she describes painting in the wilderness as ‘transcendent and exhilarating’, these experiences clearly translate into her work. Rigmor Clarke (1935- ) was born in Sweden and moved to Canada with her family in 1949 settling on a ranch near Mount Robson, at Tet Juane Cache, British Columbia. At the age of 21 moved to Shell Lake, Saskatchewan where she met her husband, started a family, farmed the land, and pursued her painting career. Working out of her studio quonset, she has led an active career and has shown and sold her paintings all over Canada, to individuals, corporations and to public and private collections.
