Extended Label Info: Trudy Fischer created serigraphs and paintings in various mediums. Created during the 1950’s Abstract Expressionist art movement, this work explores the dynamic effects of brushwork, colour and composition. This work has active brushwork style created in a predominantly violet colour palette. Fischer’s painting is energetic, yet balanced through a consistent use of colour, shape and brushwork. As much of the work in the Abstract Expressionist movement, this work explores spontaneous and subconscious creativity that focus on the emotional, spiritual, or psychological impact on the viewer. Trudy Fischer (1917-1997) was born in in Basel, Switzerland. She studied from 1948 to 1950 before coming to Montreal, Canada, where she completed further studies. She also studied in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan with Eli Bornstein and at the University of Regina with Kenneth Lochhead and Arthur McKay. In addition to her own artistic practice, Fischer worked as a part-time librarian at Saskatoon's Normal School and an art instructor at the Saskatoon Art Centre and the School for the Deaf. In 1956, Fischer received a Canada Council grant for her research in art education for people with disabilities.
