Extended Label Info: In this crisp watercolour painting, artist Catherine Macaulay deftly uses precise application of colour to create a strong sense of form and space. Though her work is detailed and realistic, the extremely close-up viewpoint of the plants and pebbles in her composition transforms her subject matter into a meditative study of light and shadow. Her work draws from natural world experiences; through images of growth, she explores shadows, light and intensity of colour. In her words, “My process has evolved as an interpretation of a close-up landscape that comes out of my experience in that landscape. I’ve always worked in watercolour, and love to find that sweet spot between being in control and letting the paint and paper take me to unexpected places.” Catherine Marsha Macaulay is a Saskatchewan based artist, born in Swift Current, and currently living in Val Marie, close to the Grasslands National Park. Macauley earned her BA from the University of Saskatchewan and her Master of Library Science from the University of Alberta. Her interest in art was ignited through classes at the University of Regina earning an Honours degree in Studio Art and Art History. She has exhibited across Western Canada, and in Scotland and Ireland. Her work is represented internationally in public and private collections.
