Extended Label Info: In this mixed-media painting, Popescul applies paint using a variety of methods from flat brush strokes to extruded lines and pointillist dots. She also incorporates tiny found objects, such as buttons and miniature dolls. The title of this artwork, “patchwork painting” and the geometric composition with repeated patterns and highly textured surface suggests the artist was inspired by “patchwork” quilts, a type of decorative blanket pieced together from smaller patches of cloth, often made for the use of family in the home. Historically, quilts were primarily made by women and were considered a more of a craft item rather than an art object. As feminist art theory began examining this “hidden labour” by women in the 1970’s, museums, galleries and art collectors started to recognize, display and collect quilts as artistically, culturally, and personally significant objects. And artwork made in the style of a quilt, such as this work, is understood to reference the history of domestic arts and craft. Dana Wareing Popescul (1956 - 2005) was an artist and educator based in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. Born in Regina, she spent her early years on a farm just North of Regina. After earning her Bachelor of Education Degree (Special Education) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1979, she moved with her husband and young family to Prince Albert. There she taught at King George School until the birth of her second child. Popescul became known for her mixed media compositions. Her artwork has been exhibited provincially, and is held in several public collections, including the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Each year at the Mann Art Gallery Winter Festival in Prince Albert, her memory is honoured in the Dana Wareing Popescul Memorial Award for Mixed Media.
