Extended Label Info: A studio-trained artist from Montreal, Bruce Parsons was the first curator to be hired at Regina’s Dunlop Art Gallery. Parsons worked as a conceptual painter creating colourful, abstract paintings in the 1960s while going on to explore mediums such as sculpture, photography, performance and video art. It was in the 1960s that Parsons received funding from the Saskatchewan Arts Board which allowed him a trip to New York to gain inspiration for a series of work. Out of that experience came pieces such as Blue Slough, where his use of bright colours and references to nature reflect the colour field style of abstract painting that was prevalent at the time. Parsons’ work contributes to the abstract paintings that are a part of Saskatchewan’s artistic history. Bruce Parsons (1937-) was born in Montreal. He studied commercial design at Sir George Williams College (now Concordia University) and later, drawing and painting at the Ontario College of Art. In the early 1960s, Parsons was hired as the First professional staff member for the Dunlop Art Gallery. He spent time travelling to Europe, Mexico, Guatemala, Egypt and New York and participated in workshops at Emma Lake with well-known artists such as Ken Noland and Jules Olitski. Parsons taught at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design from 1969-1975 and is a Professor Emeritus at York University.
