Extended Label Info: This drawing is part of series of initially inspired by an art performance that the artist John Noestheden organized in the 1980s, in which he commissioned a skywriter to draw a 4-mile diameter ‘smoke ring’ over downtown Toronto at sunset. In his art practice, Noesthedon describes his goal as to “…comprehend the human experience: time, place, origin, and collective consciousness.” In this drawing of a “roof” floating cloud-like in the sky, he invites us to contemplate on the differences between a physical object and a visual symbol. While a roof provides a physical shelter overhead, a drawing of a roof or an ephemeral cloud in the shape of a roof does not, yet all three are understood to mean a protective structure. John Noestheden (1945 - ) was born in Amsterdam, and moved to Canada in 1952. He received a BFA in 1973 from the University of Windsor and an MFA in 1975 from Tulane University, New Orleans. Noestheden moved to Regina in 1990 to teach sculpture and drawing at the University of Regina. In 2010, he moved to Hamilton, Ontario where he maintains a rigorous art practice. His work is exhibited internationally and is represented in Canadian and American art museums as well as public and private collections.
