Extended Label Info: Though Don McVeigh uses very ordinary objects as subject matter for his artwork, his compositions transcend these humble materials, and transform fabrics, string, bamboo, and other natural material such as flowers and feathers into magical or and meditative arrangements. With great skill, McVeigh creates a trompe l’oeil effect that appears near photographic in its sense of realism. As such, McVeigh brings his subject matter to life and creates an optical illusion that captures our eye and our imagination. Don McVeigh (1951- ) was born in Edmonton, Alberta. McVeigh studied printmaking at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, earning his BFA with Distinction in 1973. After travelling in Holland during 1975, McVeigh moved to Saskatchewan. He earned his MFA at the University of Regina in 1978, and then moved to Saskatoon. In 1985, McVeigh moved to Ottawa, where he taught drawing at the Ottawa School of Art for many years. McVeigh's artworks have been exhibited across Canada since the early 1970s and are held in numerous private and public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank and JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture (formerly Glenbow Museum).
