Item Name: Drawing
Title: Untitled
Maker: Jack Severson
Year: 1978
Country: Canadian
Materials: graphite; watercolour; crayon
Measurements: in frame: 67 cm x 82 cm; work: 32 cm x 47 cm
ID Number: ART 132
Legal Status: ART RENTAL
Extended Label Info: Although the subject of this drawing is highly abstracted, the composition is similar to a landscape. A lightly painted area at the top could be “sky” sectioning off a horizon line and the “ground” layer below, made of gestural lines. Taking the place of a figure in the centre of the page is a very precisely lined shape, a drawing or rubbing like an open fan. From a distance, the colours seem quite muted, like a pastel-tinted pencil drawing. Looking closely, we can see a layer of almost legible handwriting underneath opaque paint, suggesting that this was drawn on repurposed paper. Layers of pencil crayon softly rubbed in add touches of warmth. Dark, heavy lines passionately slashed into the composition create a visual sense of energy. Highlights are emphasized in white. The effect is more feeling than image. John Russell (Jack) Severson (1948 - ) has exhibited widely across Canada with his oil, acrylic, collage, pen, ink, and print works. Born in Regina, Severson began his studies in art at the University of North Dakota (1968). Returning to Saskatchewan, he attended the art workshops at Emma Lake. Severson studied with Ronald B. Kitaj (1970), who is remembered for fusing Pop Art collage techniques with expressionistic brushwork; and with William Wiley (1973), who was a founding member of the California Funk Movement, a group of artists who also used found objects, and created highly expressive, often figurative works that incorporated humour. In addition to his studio practice, Severson worked as a curatorial assistant at the MacKenzie Art Gallery during the 1970s. After earning his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Regina (1990), Severson taught as an art instructor at the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (now First Nations University of Canada). His work is represented in several public collections, including MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina), Nickle Arts Museum (Calgary), and SK Arts.
