Extended Label Info: "Sierra Ascendants" was created by the artist collective called Phomohobes. It incorporates images from commercial magazines published between 1970 and 1990. The foreground reflects Phomohobes’ practice of altering or sculpting body shapes into something strange and elegant through the medium of photocollage. Expanding on the use of found collage, the frame used in work combines mismatched strips of 80s/90s unsold framing stock. By re-purposing vintage materials, Phomohobes playfully comment on nostalgia and pop visual culture histories. This work was part of the 2019 exhibition" Off-Centre: Queer Contemporary Art in the Prairies". Phomohobes are Jason Cawood and Colby Richardson. Together, they draw from a collected archive of appropriated images to create works that continue, while remaining resolutely outside of, the practice of traditional collage. Cawood is a multi-disciplinary artist whose works have been exhibited internationally, including the exhibition "Golden Jubilee' at the Dunlop Art Gallery in 2012. Colby Richardson is a digital and graphic artist interested in analog video and graphic design.
