Extended Label Info: This painting is painted in the Woodlands style or Woodlands School, which is a painting style developed by Norval Morrisseau and Indigenous artists in the Great Lakes area. It is characterized by outlined forms of people, animals and plant life, as well as the use of strong, vivid colours. Entitled “The Grand Entry” this artwork invokes the colour and majesty of the opening ceremonies for a Pow Wow celebration. The “Grand Entry” is a procession of elders and dancers who open the Pow Wow. First, the Eagle Staff enters, followed by flags, and then to the sound of the drum, the head dancers enter: Men's Traditional, Men's Grass Dance, Men's Fancy, Women's Traditional, Women's Jingle, and Women's Fancy, followed by the younger dancers in the same order. In this painting, the regalia, or costumes of the three dancers suggest the first two are dressed for Men’s Traditional dancing, followed by a dancer in a Women’s Jingle dress. Darren Desnomie is a Nêhiyawak (Cree) artist from the Peepeekisis First Nation at Balcarres, Saskatchewan in Treaty 4 territory. He studied at First Nations University of Canada (then known as SIFC). Based in Regina, Desnomie also holds a Certificate in Addictions Counselling from SIAST (2012) and works with youth. This painting was purchased for the Albert library collection from the artist following an exhibition held at the historic Albert Branch library in partnership with the First Nations University of Canada (SIFC).
